Review: A Touch of Darkness (Hades and Persephone #1)

46011935

A Touch of Darkness

(Hades & Persephone #1)

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist.

Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible.

After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.

The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—and it’s forbidden.

Review:

I actually was on the blog tour, and read a sample (5ish chapters) there, but I was burning to read this before that, and I grabbed a copy on release day, despite knowing an ARC was heading my way. SO…if that doesn’t say how much I loved this one, I guess I’ll have to add some details… XD

I wasn’t instantly a fan of Persephone, I liked her, but she didn’t stand out. Which is the point. She’s normal, ordinary, powerless…but is she? As soon as she entered Nevernight, I could feel the true story start, and the stakes were set well before she realizes she isn’t going to get away with her single rebellious thought so easily.

I love Hades’ character, but more than that, I loved all of the characters who are kind to Persephone, especially the ones who know who she really is, from the start, as they also mostly all know Hades, and yet they treat her in a way she’s never known. She thinks they were ‘ordered’ to be this way, and while that’s probably true, I get the feeling that they would have accepted her willingly regardless, which is special and important.

The romance was steamy, and I can easily see how ACOMAF is viewed as a retelling of Hades and Persephone, not just in the romance, but in the emotion and chemistry, and this one has a similar feel and I loved all the important messages that are shared about acceptance and confidence, friendship, compassion, kindness, and love.

I enjoyed Scarlett St. Clair debut, but mythology has always been one of my first reading loves (well mythology and fantasy) and this one was well worth the wait!

Here’s my reading update after I started this that was posted on Goodreads:
Wow, this book! I stayed up way too late reading this, and I still didn’t want to stop! I almost never read a book so quickly/without breaks, but this one is so good!

I read the first few chapters a while back, but it wasn’t the finished book, so I had to wait. I finally got the whole book, and I can’t get enough!

Book Series: Standalone

Synopsis: SoHo, 1981. Twelve-year-old Olympia is an artist—and in her neighborhood, that’s normal. Her dad and his business partner Apollo bring antique paintings back to life, while her mother makes intricate sculptures in a corner of their loft, leaving Ollie to roam the streets of New York with her best friends Richard and Alex, drawing everything that catches her eye.

Then everything falls apart. Ollie’s dad disappears in the middle of the night, leaving her only a cryptic note and instructions to destroy it. Her mom has gone to bed, and she’s not getting up. Apollo is hiding something, Alex is acting strange, and Richard has questions about the mysterious stranger he saw outside. And someone keeps calling, looking for a missing piece of art. . . .

Olympia knows her dad is the key–but first, she has to find him, and time is running out.

#SummerreadyReview: This story is well written, and I loved how well the characters passions and personalities came across. This story is unlike anything I’ve read, and it’s mysterious and vivid descriptions easily held my attention.

I enjoyed reading this, but is definitely has a darker tone than I am comfortable recommending to children, and even some teens. There’s a lot of mention of abuse and neglect, along with themes of mental illness, some crime, and starvation. It is something that needs some context and even parental guidance for most audiences, and could even cause problems for some readers. The pacing was also spotty, and the story would pick up only to lag again, coupled with the dark theme, it was difficult to read this more than a chapter or two at a time, despite the fact that most MG books tend to be easier for me to finish quickly.

I liked that this book deals with difficult topics, but I’m not sure I’d recommend most children read something that’s so…heavy, by themselves, or without some guidance. I did like that there were resources at the end about mental illness and mental health and some numbers for those in need…but my worry is, what if something triggers a reader, and they end up needing help but not ever finishing the story? With something like this, it’s hard to know if reading this would help, or harm some readers, which is always the problem with heavy topics, but as MG-teen it’s a sensitive time, and hard to know how they would respond.

Episode 3: Mafia Gods Paranormal Reverse Harem: The Curse of Ra

(Mafia Gods Paranormal Reverse Harem: The Curse of Ra #3)

by Cleo Fox
Never ending darkness. It swallowed me whole. Cold and unforgiving. Nothing before it.Then a light shone through, piercing my being, and I came to be. Snow and TJ, my first memory that made the darkness slink away. He’s the light I never knew existed. And even though he won’t ever admit it, I think he needed me, too.

Twenty-years later, we had jobs and a place to live. We work for the local mafia, which puts the skills we learned on the street to good use. Or at least it would if our boss would let us do more than shake down something tougher than the boneless, greasy con-men we normally got.

But everything changes the night we meet a god and I unwittingly gain his attention. My relationship with TJ is alerted forever, and other mafia bosses move in on our territory: Chronos, twin brothers Hades and Anubis, and the ever powerful Ra.

Our boss Janus isn’t happy, and neither am I. The darkness that holds my past has begun to let go, and these gods are a part of that. But do I want to know the truth of who and what I am?

I loved the flashbacks in this one! The others are interesting, but I loved that this is one that empowered Min’s story, and wasn’t of her being used by the others in some way. I’m sure there’s more to the gods’ stories too though, and I’m excited to see her finally start talking to the others. I loved seeing her with TJ as she tries to help him.

Fierce Pride: Episode Five

(Fierce Pride #5)

The Fierce Pride Saga continues as Shanora finds herself caught in the middle of a struggle over power, beliefs, and where her heart falls into the mix.
Easton’s clan vies for my throne and if I lose, more than my title is at stake. They want me to fight to the death. They want me to fight him and though he doesn’t appear to desire the win, he’s quick to enter in tournament. With my back against the wall and my spirit tested, I too vie for the opportunity to rule our people and become a part of a world I may not have been seeking but welcome. I have ties here, both blood and beyond and if I lose, I’ll never get to discover my place within it all. I must go against the plea of my loyal companions Davis and Gael and even the warnings of Easton himself. There’s more to covet here than just a land and its people for me.

There’s a home.

Fierce Pride 5 is book five of twelve. Expect a new installment every two weeks!

*I received an advance copy from the author. This does not affect my review.*
I’m so excited I was able to read an advance copy of this one! After Episode 4 and that bonus scene in the boxset, I had an idea of how this would play out, but seeing it actually play out, and seeing the characters as they are starting to see how things really are was so worth reading! Easton wasn’t instantly one of my favorites, but after Ep. 2-3 where we started to see more of his side of things, I realized he’s possibly one of the most honest and caring of the Panthera in Shanora’s life. Not to say that the others aren’t, but I feel that if any are ‘true to oneself’ it would be him, though I’m hoping to find out more about Gael, and especially Davis’ history soon. I loved seeing more about the kingdom and a little hint of what’s to come as Shanora’s rise to power draws near, and the ending makes for an interesting start to the half-way point in the series!

Fierce Pride: Episode Three

(Fierce Pride #3)

With her world upheaved Shanora now seeks the truth about who she is… Will she accept what she is to become?

The men lied to me, not about who I was but what they need me for. Their king has been captured and I seem to be the only one who can bring them closer to him. Their reasons seem like even more lies and I’m left wondering if the only truth I know is what I see in the mirror.

But even reflections can tell tall tales.

I didn’t fall into a place of wonder and madness. I was taken.

This world is a perfect, enchanting wonderland. The people here are just as alluring.

But we all have our secrets.

Like the white rabbit who’s leading a rebellion right under the King’s nose. Or the sweet March Hare who’s actually an enemy spy. Or my one true ally in all of this, a killer who’s so feared they won’t even say his real name.

As for me, I have more secrets than all of them combined. Because Wonderland is waiting for the beloved Alice Liddell.

And I’m just the bitch pretending to be her.

This is a reverse harem series, recommended for readers 18 and over.

REVIEW:

*I received an advance copy from the author. This does not affect my review.*

This series is really interesting, and a combination of so many things! Mythology -yes, but a very wide and unique mixture of deities- with mystery, sexual tension -and a touch of angst- action, supernaturals, and strong female lead, just to name a few draws. The pacing isn’t super fast, but is pretty steady, and I never feel like it’s lagging or hard to follow (well Min’s visions are interesting, but those should be explained in time, I hope!)

This series is hard to review so far, though I’m enjoying this new development. At least now she gets to find out who shes’s dealing with. But I’m also enjoying all the mystery about Min’s past, and even TJ’s in part, from before Min. We start where we left off in Ep. 1, with TJ and Min running from the police. I’ll admit, I enjoyed this episode even more than the first, and look forward to reading more of this story as it comes out! I really liked the new characters this one adds to the story, and an interested to see how Min (and TJ) deal with this new reality.

The next adventure in the Fierce Pride Saga takes Shanora to ancient lands… When history shockingly shifts to reality will she be ready?

My father isn’t just alive. He’s a… king, which makes me way more things than I’m ready for. I’ve been summoned alongside my Pantheran retrievers to speak for him. He’s done a great betrayal by bringing me and what I am into the world and not just his position on the throne is at stake. Suddenly under the microscope, all eyes are on me to potentially succeed him if things regarding his trial go awry and with that, comes immense pressure and a betrayal of my own I never saw coming. I started to trust each of these men who brought me into this new world, but for one of them…

Had it always been a lie?

This series keeps me on my toes! Reading this advanced copy from the author I can’t believe how much I’ve come to enjoy this story! Each episode has ended with a reveal/cliff-hanger of sorts, and while I guess where this was headed just before the characters involved did, I think this has been my favorite episode yet! The whole time it’s been building up to this, and I’m so excited to see how it turns out!

My assumptions on the last book have all pretty much been proven right, and yet here I am more excited than ever to see what happens now that I’m left speechless with how things are turning out! I love the main characters in this one, so I can’t wait to see more bonding and I’m definitely excited to see some of them work out their differences!

The Panthera (pan · ther· a): noun. a lost island nation with the power of the panther

I’ve studied the Aruti people for a long time and the world knows their story. They were a great people eliminated by catastrophic events; natural events but tragic nonetheless. I’m fascinated with the extraordinary wonder of their legacy, and my classes gather droves of students just wanting to learn more. It’s under that umbrella I meet Gael, a businessman who’s curious about my research. His company wishes to fund me for continued findings and the man himself… well, there’s a little more to his desires.

Gael comes with the company of two other men, two, in all their mystery, who smolder just as hot and divinely as he does and I’m drawn into their world no matter how dark it ends up becoming. They take me along a journey of history and mayhem I believe I already know, but somehow, I’m vastly far from the truth.

As it turns out, the Aruti people never perished as I believed but are alive and well. Not only that, they’ve become something… else and these men, Gael, Easton, and Davis are here to help me see that. They need me.

And I’m more powerful than even they are.

Readers: The Fierce Pride Saga is a paranormal romance serial of short books classified as episodes. Consider each part like an episode of a television show, which continues into the others. There will be cliffhangers–sometimes in the middle of the action–and the serial’s overall heat factor will be off the charts, my friends! These books are considered a reverse harem, as there’s not one but three heroes. The story starts off as a slow burn, but expect group love making scenes (no m/m) with the heroine at the focus as the serial progresses. If that’s ok with you, then come along for this crazy ride with Shanora and heroes!

REVIEW:

Oops, I didn’t realize I didn’t review this one. I read each of the episodes separate, so I won’t worry about cross-posting those here, but you can find them on the individual episode pages.

I loved seeing the story so far in this format, in one easy to read edition, and that ‘bonus’ story is worth it if you aren’t sure you want to buy this if you’ve already read the others, you are going to want this as well! I’ve enjoyed see how this story progresses, and really enjoy watching the characters personalities and individual stories intertwine. I can’t wait to see how the next set of episodes unfold, and look forward to many more chapters with this series!

Wow, so good! I’m normally not a fan of the shorter books and serials or episodes, but this one manages to have the perfect balance of story between the breaks that I don’t feel slighted, I get just enough action/romance/etc. to satisfy, but those endings definitely keep me wanting to know more! I’m excited that I got an advance copy to read, though that means more waiting and between Davis and Easton, I need to know what happens! I really enjoy the lore in this one so far, and now that she’s been around the guys a bit, I think there’s more lore and character history to come! Plus, we learned a bit more about how the Lycan are connected.

From the start, I was exciting about this story. I could tell it was one I wouldn’t be able to put down…

And guess what?

I was right!

It’s funny since I’ve known for years that I was neural-divergent but only recently tested (still waiting…) but it’s something I also noticed in reading. I’m always drawn to those characters who are more like anti-heroes, and morally gray, never really one side or the others. So Dystopians are something I’m always finding on my ‘Favorite’ books list! This one might just be one of the Top!

I loved the characters, Cristan was easily my favorite from the start, but Mallory was super easy for me to relate to, more so even than many other characters I read about, and I loved seeing her realize that she isn’t weird, or broken, or even unwanted…Irrelevant. Instead the same things she was taught make her wrong was the same things that make her strong. Being different can be powerful, and I loved seeing this message to clear in this story. I can’t wait to read more of this series, you’ll definitely want the next book close by!

(Caraval #3)

Welcome, welcome to Finale, the third and final book in Stephanie Garber’s #1 New York Times bestselling Caraval series!

A love worth fighting for. A dream worth dying for. An ending worth waiting for.

It’s been two months since the Fates were freed from a deck of cards, two months since Legend claimed the throne for his own, and two months since Tella discovered the boy she fell in love with doesn’t really exist.

With lives, empires, and hearts hanging in the balance, Tella must decide if she’s going to trust Legend or a former enemy. After uncovering a secret that upends her life, Scarlett will need to do the impossible. And Legend has a choice to make that will forever change and define him.

Caraval is over, but perhaps the greatest game of all has begun. There are no spectators this time: only those who will win, and those who will lose everything.

Welcome, welcome to Finale. All games must come to an end…

*I received an ARC for this title. This does not affect my review.*

This is one of the top titles I was waiting for, and here I am again, unsure how to rate/review it… Wow, I loved reading this one, and while there were plenty of feels, it actually wasn’t as…magical…as the other two, instead this one seemed to deal a lot more with what was ‘real’. What really happened/happens, what characters really feel, what things really mean. It was beautiful and tragic and gruesome, and I loved it! I didn’t end this one in a euphoric high that books sometimes leave, but instead this is one of those that gives me everything I need in a closing, yet still leaves enough for me to imagine that the characters’ stories go on, even if our look at it is over. That satisfying feeling that lasts longer than the euphoric high, and overtime never fades.

Children’s ARC Review: What Is Given from the Heart by Patricia C. McKissack

What Is Given from the Heart

This final, magnificent picture book from three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and Newbery Honor author Patricia McKissack is a poignant and uplifting celebration of the joy of giving.

“Misery loves company,” Mama says to James Otis. It’s been a rough couple of months for them, but Mama says as long as they have their health and strength, they’re blessed. One Sunday before Valentine’s Day, Reverend Dennis makes an announcement during the service– the Temples have lost everything in a fire, and the church is collecting anything that might be useful to them. James thinks hard about what he can add to the Temple’s “love box,” but what does he have worth giving? With her extraordinary gift for storytelling, McKissack–with stunning illustrations by Harrison–delivers a touching, powerful tale of compassion and reminds us all that what is given from the heart, reaches the heart.

I loved reading this story! The characters and their story is one many can relate to and is a blessing to read. I really enjoyed the art style and that there were splashes of color on each image, but it also uses duller and more neutral colors so that it’s not overly busy, giving it a timeless feel. I’ve always enjoyed finding the hidden gems in illustrated stories like this, but this one stands above, and will be one I can see myself recommending for years to come! James Otis and his Mama are shining examples of what it means to love our neighbors, and to have a caring heart.

I am very happy after reading this book! I found the style and format easy to read, and something that’s suitable for all ages, that can be enjoyed by both children and their parents as they draw closer to each other and to God’s Word while reading though this. An easy to understand guide to help introduce children to praying and to strengthen their faith as they learn to develop this vital skill. Each page has a verse and easy to understand examples that many children will be able to relate to, then a sample prayer on the opposite page.

I enjoyed the artwork, and the story in this one was fun to read. Not anything really new, but a good story with plenty of visuals for beginning readers and young children. With bright colors and easy to read sentences, I can easily see this being something children enjoy reading.

I enjoyed this story, but didn’t love it, and was irritated to find ‘x-tra’ was used for ‘X’ in the story. I’ve always been picky about this sort of book/style of teaching for that reason, and just wish misspellings or using words like X-ray weren’t taken so often as they feel like cheating or laziness more often that not. I did enjoy the art, and most of the letters and their sentences were easy to read, and good for beginners.

Praise for CHILDREN OF THE FIFTH SUN

“An action-packed, globe-hopping science fiction thriller… pedal-to-the-metal pacing and relentless action make it easy to turn pages…” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Insane! What Gareth did here was incredible! This author took a global look at America, China, and Russia, and added a species from another era into the mix, to create a well-researched novel of suspense, intrigue, with dashing individuals. The characters travel the world on a unique mission while trying to stay out of the line of fire as rogue government agencies from several different countries try to stop them. It’s a wild ride from California to Peru, from Egypt to Siberia. The amount of research put into this novel is on par with a Michael Crichton novel. The main character, Kelly Graham, reminded me of Dirk Pitt from Clive Cussler’s novels. Overall, an incredible read and a book I’m recommending.” ―Jonas Saul, Best-selling author of the Sarah Roberts Series, April 2017

Suspend disbelief and let yourself travel on a downriver, undersea, and overland adventure in this well-constructed novel. The author takes you on a fast paced journey full of intrigue, government secrets, unusual creatures and just a tad of romance. Superlatives abound and the literary illumination paints an image so clear you feel you are there with the characters. For those who know the author, there are bit of his personality revealed which makes reading the novel even more enjoyable. A bit Tom Clancy, a hint of Dan Brown — authentically Gareth in his debut work. ―Charity Scripture

“Scientist Worthington’s understanding of the complexities and possibilities of marine biology and endocrinology are evident.” ―Publishers Weekly, May 2017

Genre: “Science Faction” – science fiction, action and adventure with fact-based science, theories and mythology

IN ALMOST EVERY BELIEF SYSTEM ON EARTH, there exists a single unifying mythos: thousands of years ago a great flood devastated the Earth’s inhabitants. From the ruins of this cataclysm, a race of beings emerged from the sea bestowing knowledge and culture upon humanity, saving us from our selfish drive toward extinction. Some say this race were “ancient aliens” who came to assist our evolution.

But what if they weren’t alien at all? What if they evolved right here on Earth, alongside humans . . . and they are still here? And, what if the World’s governments already know?

***

Kelly Graham is a narcissistic self-assured freelance photographer specializing in underwater assignments. While on a project in the Amazon with his best friend, Chris D’Souza, a mysterious and beautiful government official, Freya Nilsson, enters Kelly’s life and turns it upside down. Her simple request to retrieve a strange object from deep underwater puts him in the middle of an international conspiracy. A conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history.
