NARCOSIS ROOM

NarcosisRoom-COVER-1-29-19Title: NARCOSIS ROOM

Author: Louise Cypress

Pub. Date: February 19, 2019

Publisher: Owl Hollow Press

Formats: Paperback, eBook

Pages: 318

Total Recall meets Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies.

Sleep for three months and make your problems go away.

Ellie Savage is used to promises. Her dermatologist dad and her psychiatrist mom run the Narcosis Clinic, a medical facility famous for ultimate makeovers, where disturbing issues are resolved while patients are beautified. Clients like pop star Dean Mathews are grateful to narcosis for healing their deepest wounds. Ellie is her parents’ most ardent supporter until her dreams become a nightmare. Ellie discovers that her true self has been shredded to bits by the scalpel and the only way for Ellie to remember is to forget everything she thinks she knows.

“The relationship between Cole and Ellie is absorbing (it’s indisputably a mutual affection) while the twins’ dynamic–they’re supportive but playfully combative–is likewise effective. The plot eventually spins into thriller territory but shrewdly incorporates themes of parenting and self-confidence. Cypress’ prose throughout is colorful: a crowd getting into ‘a ginormous frenzy’ and Ellie walking ‘in a fog of convoluted memories and migraine medicine.’ Well-defined characters in a zigzagging medical tale rife with surprises.” —Kirkus

Review: While this one started off running, I found it pretty easy to understand what was happening. That said, this is one of those with constant action, and major surprises and twists at nearly every corner! Be sure you have some free time, because it’s easy to find yourself reading this in large chunks, or even in one setting, and it’s well worth that sleepless night (or two) it takes to finish it!

I messed up. I broke two of the Arcane Council’s laws
in one day. I swear it was an accident—but try telling that to
the Arcane authorities.

Before I
could catch my breath, my simple gypsy life of peddling potions with my
guardians is wrenched away. I’m forcibly enrolled into the prestigious and
supremely snotty Arcane Arts Academy, given shackles under the guise of mercy
for my crimes.

As if that weren’t enough,
my volatile magic bound me to two infuriatingly overbearing shifters in the
woods near campus, making me an instant pariah.
At least the history teacher
is helpful—not to mention insanely gorgeous. And besides giving me a dangerous
distraction, there’s something else he can provide—a way to finally find out
more about my father and unravel the dark mystery surrounding his death… but
some secrets have claws, and if I’m not careful, knowing the truth could get me
killed.
Follow Harper Hawkins as she
unravels more than she bargained for in OF WOLVES AND WITCHES, the first book
in the Arcane Arts Academy series, an exciting new slow-burn reverse harem
paranormal romance series perfect for fans of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
and Hex Hall!

Excerpt:
It wasn’t fair, I mused, pursing my lips from my seat at the back of the
classroom. Having to watch him from his untouchable spot at the blackboard.
The sun decided to show up to work today, heating the academy through the
many tall windows, creating a sort of greenhouse effect that left the air hazy
and just a bit too warm for comfort. I was sure there was a spell, or sigil, or
some sort of incantation they generally used to cool it. Some sort of witchy
air conditioning.
But I was glad whoever was in charge of doing that hadn’t gotten around
to it yet. Elias—er—Mr. Fitzgerald had removed his suit jacket, and I couldn’t
help but notice the top button of his crisp white dress shirt was undone,
showing off smooth tanned skin at the shallow dip of his collarbone. He didn’t
look to be sweating at all. Which was so unfair.
Even though I’d put on the weird kilt-like skirt that morning and had
opted for a short sleeve blouse, I was still sweating.
I brushed the hair from my neck, trying and failing to stare at what he
was writing on the board instead of at him.
The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up to his elbows, settling in
the crease there. His biceps—I didn’t think I’d paid enough attention to them
before.
What a mistake that was.
The thin white cotton material was stretched taut against the bulge of
his arms, making him look more like a bodybuilder than a teacher.
I licked my lips, suddenly wishing I’d stopped for a glass of water
before class. One of these days I’d wake up in time for breakfast.
It’s so damned hot in here.
“Harper?” Elias said, pointing at something he’d written on the board.
And I got the feeling it wasn’t the first time he’d said my name.
“Sorry I… I didn’t hear you. What was the question?”

Oops.

parent’s footsteps and living at The Academy, a home for those who are gifted.
The pressure to uphold the future of their parent’s dream falls on them. An
outcast and feared by most, Adair longs to break away from the expectations
dictating his future. Even if Emory tries to make him see differently. An
unexpected group of friends keep him there, but as whispers of unexplained

Chapter One

Adair
The vastness of the sky consumed him. It always had, ever
since  he
was  young,  but
tonight  seemed  different.
The  churning dark clouds cast a purplish
hue, bleeding with the softness created from the moon. The stars shone between
the pockets, obscuring the scene and making it beautiful. Far below him, the
Ruined City laid in its grave, quiet and still, the broken buildings reminding
him of splintered  bones.  The
wildness  of  the
forest  beyond  that
seemed entrancing,  calling  him
into  its  depths,
whispering  its  secrets
to only him.
Adair Stratton tugged his button-down jacket tighter around
him, trying to block the wind from his lookout post. It had taken years
to build his kingdom to what it was now, but he was relieved for  the
hidden  lookout  posts
that  led  outside,
on  the  edge
of  the mountain, and, to him, the
edge of the world. Because it was here, and
only  here,  that
the  voices  started
to  ebb,  the
darkness  in  his veins
smothering  ever  so
slightly.  In  this
brief  and  flickering moment of clarity, his mind
wandered to the girl who was locked in
the  cells  of
his  kingdom,  waiting
for  him.  Emory
Fae,  the Princess of Kiero.
He  popped  his
collar  up,  shaking
his  head  and
sighing. Under the blanket of night, he could trace back to the man he
used to be, the echo of his humanity. Thinking of her, he could see the
splaying  of  memories
come  back  to
life  all  around
him,  of  his friends,
of  the  Academy.
And  it  was
in  these  sparse
moments  of lucidity,  he
allowed  himself  to
remember.  Relishing  it,
pushing back  that  yearning
for  destruction,  pushing
back  on  the
voices, trying to lock  them
away. And like every other night, he lost. The wind howled, making the
edges of his coat and pants tug upward, his hair standing on end from the
sudden chill.
His  boots  kicked
against  the  slick
mountainside,  his  heart racing
as  the  smooth
voices  filled  his
consciousness. Adair,
this kingdom is yours. Make her bow, make her bleed and pay for what she
has done
.”  He closed his eyes for a
beat, digging his fingernails into his flesh.
Why  do
you  wait?  You
know  what  you
want.  What  you
have always  wanted
.”   Images
were  thrown  at
him;  so  quick
and enthralling, it swept his breath away. The inky crown, embedded
with  roses  and
thorns,  laid  delicately
on  top  of
her  ebony  hair. Memphis
Carter,  the  once
commander  of  the
Black  Dawn Rebellion,  bowed,
pleading  for  his
life  as  Adair
smirked.  His darkness  whisked
away  any  trace
of  rebellion.  Emory
was  by  his side as they watched the world continue
to burn, until it was only them. Always, for
them.
Adair  snarled,  then
said,  “Leave  me
alone.  Please.”   Their snickers
bounced around him, their whispers tugging at his heart. “Do  not  falter
now,  our  Dark
King.  You  have
come  so  far,
achieved  so much. The binds your
father tried to keep you in, you broke. The Academy kept you in, you turned it
to ash. We are a team. We know the desires of your  soul,
how  you  revel  in  watching
the  world  shudder
in  your  reign. You have always been more. A reckoning
force that no one can stop. Can never stop.”
He became still, his muscles taut. Opening his eyes, his
gaze fell  a  thousand
miles  away,  to
where  the  Academy
had  stood. Where a boy that once
wanted to explore the world and not shackle it had lived. He knew both were
dead now. Ice coursed through his body, spreading through his core faster than
he could register. His pulse
slowed,  the  roaring
emotions  he  felt
slowing  as  well. Darkness  encased
him,  pulling  him
down,  down,   down.
Locking him  away,  roaring,
snarling,  and  clawing
at  him.  A
slow  exhale escaped  from
between  his  dry
lips,  and  as
he  stood,  every movement was precise, a predatory
grace. Flicking his gaze below him
once  more,  and
instead  of  the
dark  beauty  that
he  was  met with earlier, the world around him was
bleeding. Dark, black blood gushed
from  the  mountainside,
thickly  caking  the
field  and  the Ruined
City.  Echoes  of
screams  filled  the
air,  and  Adair
was transported, reminded of his bloodshed, of his control and power. “Do not disappoint us, our King.”
The  corners  of  his
lips  tugged  upward
as  he  whispered
to the wind, “I won’t.”
Inside  he  screamed,
ripping  at  his
mind,  battering  against the
iron  wall,  only
to  be  drowned
entirely  by  it.
He  turned smoothly, walking back
into his world, each step anchoring him to his intentions.  Make
them bow and make them pay
. Make  her  pay.
He didn’t  look  as
he  stepped  off
the  side  of
the  cliff,  freefalling.
He plummeted, the wind howling, the cool night air stinging his skin.
He  laughed,  relishing
in  the  exhilaration
of  adrenaline,  before
he was wrenched up, his body breaking down into particles of smoke and
the darkness. Cutting through the sky, he didn’t think, he just reacted to the
power inside of him, and everything else bled away. Arching, he cut through the
clouds, moisture collecting around him like
glinting  crystals,  before
they  exploded,  and
he  cut  down, racing towards the mountain range. The
moon bathed his path in luminescent
light,  and  it  was  mere
seconds  before  he
slammed through the wall, through stone and wood. The smoothness of the
throne  room’s  granite
made  his  footfalls
silent  as  the
guards  on their rotation jumped
at his arrival.
He scoffed. “You all seem uneasy.”
They  bowed  their
heads,  their  low
murmurs  cutting  over one another.
“My King, we weren’t expecting you.”
“The losses, my King.”
“What is our course of action?”
“Enough!” he snapped, his cold voice bouncing off the walls
and silencing them instantly. He looked at the black marble and his throne,
smooth, each curve carved precisely, the bones of monsters long forgotten
inlaid in it. Taking a steadying breath, he looked at each guard, quietly
stating, “You will all do your duties and leave the Rebellion to me. As for the
girl, bring her tomorrow, along with the
other  prisoner.  Each
decision  I  make
has  a  purpose,
and  you aren’t  doubting
your  allegiance  to
me  now,  are
you?” Shifting uneasily, the guards paled in the soft light, swallowing
nervously. Their silent answer enough. Pacing, he snapped, “Now, leave me.
Return to your stations.”
They  bowed,  each
footfall  a  distant
tick  against  his
mind, until  the  stillness
of  the  night
filled  him,  and
he  was  alone
once more. Striding, he threw himself on his throne, legs hanging over
the  edges,  hands
propping  his  head
up.  Far  above
him,  the  stars glinted
down,  the  sky
opening  him  up
to  the  thousands
of uncharted miles in between space and time. And he thought of the girl
who had defied it all.
Chewing his lip, he started to count down the seconds, the
minutes,  and  the
hours  until  he
was  alone  with
her.  And  they would both see what side of him would
decide her fate.

                Bray
wasn’t sure how long she had drifted off for, but there was a puddle of wetness
against her cheek when she woke up—okay, so it was only drool from herself.
Lifting a hand up toward her cheek, she swiped the saliva away and rubbed it on
to the hammock. Classy, she thought, but there was already some gathered there
anyway.
                Remembering
the events from earlier, Bray headed straight to the hole and peeked out. She
shifted her head from left to right. Nothing. Bray looked up and down—she could
see a few bushes had already been planted in the dirt.
                Then
she saw it: a circular stone bowl filled with water sitting on top of a long
thick stem, attached to a circular bottom. A birdbath! Almost giddily, Bray
stepped on the ledge of the hole and leaped off, flapping her wings hurriedly
to the nearest pink and yellow peach. Opening her jaw wide, she bit into the
thin skin. A juicy one. The fruit filled her mouth with delicious pleasure, and
she took one more long bite before diving down to the birdbath.
                The top
of her newfound treasure was a perfect circle with tiny mounds around it
resembling hills. Bray landed on the ceramic and bent down to take a seat,
before placing her bare feet into the warm water that had been perfectly heated
from the shining sun.
                Peering
down at the clear water, Bray saw no sign of intrusion from other creatures
yet. She rotated her head in every direction, as if she would be caught just by
thinking about slipping into the water—still no sign of life.
                Flicking
her braid over her shoulder, Bray pursed her lips together to hide the smile
aching to shine against her face and jumped into the water. The splash echoed.
Her bare feet scraped the rough bottom, while her dress inflated and then clung
to her body as she shot to the surface. She let out a small giggle to herself.
It was sad that the only highlight of the past year was hopping into a shallow
pool of water with no one around except for her.
                She
leaned back into the liquid, letting herself float and moving her arms slowly
up and down, while swimming in figure-eight circles.
                Bray
closed her eyes and let the water cover her ears, so it felt like nothing in
the world existed, except for the muffled vibrations from the liquid.
                A loud
booming sounded from above, and her eyelids thrust open, meeting dark brown
eyes, light brown skin, and that black bowl hair. Tiny human. Luca.
                Freeze,
Bray thought to herself, not even blinking her eyes. She held them wide open, thinking
he wouldn’t notice her, or maybe he would just assume she was a bird. Even
though he was staring at her and had spoken something she didn’t hear clearly.
                Nope.
That isn’t going to work. He hovered closer, his eyes scrunched halfway closed
to examine her more thoroughly. Unable to hold her eyes open any longer, Bray
blinked several times.
                “What
are you?” he asked, genuine amazement creeping into his words, lips slightly
parted.
                “A
bat!” Bray yelled, and she jumped up from the warmth of the water, darting
straight for the tree hole.
                Breathing
heavily, Bray landed inside and collided with the floor. She rolled to her
back, running both hands down her face. “Why did I come out without paying
attention? I know not to!” Ruth had always told her this.
                A quake
trembled through the tree, causing shivers to run up and down her spine. What
is the little beast doing? Oh no, what if he is trying to chop down the tree?
My home—the peaches! Bray didn’t know why she was thinking about stupid peaches
when there was another fruit tree directly next door.
                Despite
the thunderous rumbling, Bray grabbed the needle from underneath her hammock
and dodged toward the window. If the little beast thought he could take her
down, then he had another thing coming. She would prick his eye—actually, she
would poke both of his eyes to protect her and Brenik’s home.
                When
Bray reached the edge of the window, the sound stopped. She peeped her head out
of the hole, right as a face met hers, his black hair falling forward over a hazel
eye—an eye she was going to poke. Startled, she jumped back instead of toward
him.
                A broad
smile crossed the little beast’s face. “Hello.”
                Freezing
once again, until she remembered that the staying-still-as-a-statue strategy
didn’t work in the birdbath, she meekly said, “Hi.”
                Bray
brought the needle up toward his smiling face, just in case.
                “Are
you planning on sewing something?” He tilted his head at the needle.
                “Yeah,
your eyeball.” She gave him a hard glare.
                “What?”
he asked while laughing hysterically.
                He was
laughing? Not scared? Bray brought the needle closer. “Yeah, you need to leave
and never come back. This is my home.”
                “No.
Technically, it’s my brother’s home,” he said, still smiling.
                “What
brother? You mean your dad out there who was planting this morning?”
                Luca
shook his head, and she didn’t miss the wince before he spoke. “No, that’s my
brother, Wes. I don’t have a mom or dad.”
                Crestfallen,
Bray lowered the needle. “Oh. Me neither. I only have a brother, but he will be
gone for a while.” She paused and glanced at the note Brenik had left behind,
her chest tightening. Then she shrugged it off and shifted her gaze back to the
boy. “By the way, my name is Brayora, but you can call me Bray.” For some
reason, she wasn’t worried anymore about the human.
                “I’m
Luca Duran.” He plopped his thin fingers on the edge of the hole.
                “Yeah,
I heard your name this morning, little beast. I mean, Luca.” She thought little
beast suited him better than Luca.

“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.

“There are two things you need to know about yourself if you want to be free—what you stand for, and what you stand against.” Lady Penelope held up her hands, brandishing a pair of daggers that had been hidden in her skirts. “This world lives enslaved to its destruction, and so long as you are living, as long as you are fighting, you will be free.”

I gazed at the daggers, transfixed. Each blade was clothed in a leather scabbard, but the silver and obsidian of the daggers’ hilts winked at me, as though it was calling for me.

PRAGUE, 1870.

For the last ten years, nineteen-year-old Eleanora Svobodová has worked as a servant in her stepmother’s household. Along with her older brother, she dreams of the day they will be free to live life on their own terms.

But everything changes when their estranged grandmother comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria. Throughout Bohemia, a string of murders and secret whispers hint at a larger coup. As the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers, Lady Penelope is determined to mete out the perpetrators. Now, Eleanora must make the choice between a life of intrigue and saving the lives of others.

Can Eleanora find a way do the right thing and still find freedom?

With a fun blend of historical fiction, true love, castle intrigue, and family dysfunction, The Order of the Crystal Daggers is the latest adventure series from C. S. Johnson.

REVIEW: I enjoyed this book, and feel it has a lot going for it. That said, there were some problems, mostly that the second half seemed very chaotic and it was hard to keep up with all the new characters and to follow the events as they happened. The first half was brilliant, and easy to follow, so that sudden change of pacing was difficult to adjust to.

Still, I loved the setting and characters overall, and really enjoyed the adventure and history aspect. I’m excited to see more of this series in the future, as I did really enjoy the story and the characters that we did get a chance to learn about were all well written and complex. It’s just the rapid-fire introductions later on that I struggled to keep up with who’s who.

“What is it?” I asked him, noticing that he was staring back at me. “It seems you have remembered your dancing quite well,” he said, and I shook my head at once, keeping my forced smile steady as we passed by Lady POW.

“The practice helps,” I replied neutrally. “And it did help that Karl was a good dancer last night. Some of the others I danced with were not as good, but fortunately they blamed it on their own poor performance.”

“They were likely distracted by your beauty.”

“You don’t have to talk to me like that.” I rolled my eyes. “Be- sides, you might distract me now with your false flattery.”

“Flattery is always false, mademoiselle. I was speaking truth.”

Amir smiled. “You may have that problem in the future, when other men are dancing with you.”

“I can learn to handle it later, then.”

“You can also learn it now. There is nothing efficient about wasting time, after all.”

“I’d rather not, thank you very much. There is no need for you to continue talking to me.” My tone was frosty and bitter, every part a perfect complement to the kindness in his eyes. “Unless, of course, you’d like to tell me why you stole my father’s book from me when we unfortunately met?”

“I would not say it was unfortunate.” “What would you say it was, then?”

Amir’s mustache curled around the corners of his mouth. “God’s humor at work.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, frustrated and infuriated. “Are you insulting me?”

“Never, mademoiselle.”

Before I could accuse him of lying in addition to insulting me, or before I could “accidentally” begin stepping on his toes, Lady POW began calling out instructions, making me feel even more insulted and infuriated—and even worse, isolated, and unable to do anything to escape.

“Hands up, Eleanora,” she called. “Yes, take a step closer. Now, remember to smile. Watch your timing; men are supposed to lead. And show your interest. Pretend you are dancing with a prince!”

Between Amir’s dancing and Lady Penelope’s snappy judgements, I felt trapped in a world of soft tyranny. It was a world where the truth was too impolite to be spoken, and even if it had to be, it had to be dressed up in clothes as strange and as ornate as the ones I was wearing, and it was likely as unrecognizable as I was in the end.

I certainly felt nothing like my usual self.

The others did not seem to believe it was me, either.

Amir held me at a polite distance as we danced, but I was still close enough I could see the pained delight in his eyes as he watched me, and recalling Lady POW’s earlier mistake of calling me by my mother’s name, I suddenly wondered if he was thinking of her, too.

The last note of the waltz rang out, and we finally slowed to a stop.

“Why did you take my father’s book?” This time, my question

was quiet but harsh against the growing silence. Amir seemed surprised, but he did not refrain from responding.

“It was not your father’s book, mademoiselle.”

I slowly dropped my hands from his. Already, I knew what he was going to say.

“When I saw you, it was like falling into a portal to the past, twenty-six years ago. I saw the book, and I knew it could only belong to my Naděžda.”

“You knew my mother.” The words were chunky and foreign to me as they came out of my mouth. I knew I had no reason to accuse him of something I already knew to be true.

“Yes. She was my dearest friend for many years before … ” Amir said quietly. I saw his gaze lower to the scar on his right hand. “And when she … left … I was angry.”

It plagued me, knowing that Lady POW was not the only one who seemed to prefer my mother to me.

“When she left the Order, you mean?”

“She did not leave the Order,” Amir whispered. “She left me.”

It took me a long moment to process everything. Amir and I were still standing in the middle of the room. Somewhere, a thousand moments and a million miles away, Lady POW clapped and praised us, telling us I was already much better at the waltz than before. She was calling for another song, but I barely heard any of it, as I watched while Amir’s eyes swam over with memories and emotion.

There was suddenly no denying the full truth of the matter. Amir had been in love with my mother.
