October Wrap-Up: 2018 (Is this even worth writing?)

Okay, so here I am again, admitting that I only finished one book again, well not even as it was a novella. That said, I loved it, and If I had to choose just one, I’m happy this was the one I finished. So, what did I read?

The Lost Sisters

(The Folk of the Air #1.5)

Rating: 5 of 5 ★★★★★
Mini Review: The Cruel Prince is still my favorite read of the year, and this story was a complete surprise! As I eagerly await The Wicked King, I was so happy for this brief chance to return to Elfhame, and not only did I get to return, but this story actually added so much to the series by telling things from Taryn’s POV, something I hadn’t realized it wanted or needed until I started reading it!
So I’ve been flailing when it comes to finishing books lately, but I’m currently reading a few, and I hope to have more finished by next month. Until then, happy reading!

Watch You Burn

Jenny didn’t want to move to the creepy, possibly haunted town with her dad. But the cops are on to her, and the only way she can protect herself is by moving as far away from her hometown as possible and staying out of trouble.

But even after she moves, Jenny still gets the itch. The itch to light a match and then watch it burn.

It’s something she hasn’t been able to stop, ever since an accident years ago. Now, in a new town, Jenny has the strange feeling that someone is watching her every move. Will her arsonist ways be exposed? Or is the burning truth deep inside her a greater danger?

1. Why did you decide to pick up this book–cover or content?

Content. I enjoy a good mystery and this one sounded interesting.

2. Who is your favorite character so far, and why?

I don’t really have one. At different moments I find myself liking one characters or other, but I don’t really have a favorite.

3. Will you finish this one?

I plan to, but it’s too early to say. It’s not as exciting as I’d hoped, but I’m still enjoying it for the most part.

4. This book reminds me of…

I haven’t read any books of this genre for a while, so I really don’t know.

5. What type of read is this one? (Slow but interesting, cannot put it down…)

It’s slow, things keep happening that keep me reading, but it’s not a fast-paced thriller or even the faster pace of the YA Fantasy books I’ve grown used to.

The Sandman is seventeen-year-old Nora’s closest friend and best-kept secret. He has to be, if she doesn’t want a one-way ticket back to the psychiatrist. It took her too long to learn not to mention the hooded figure in her dreams to her mother, who still watches Nora as if she’ll crack. So when Nora’s friends start mysteriously dying gruesome deaths in their sleep, she isn’t altogether surprised when the police direct their suspicion at her. The Sandman is the only one she can turn to for answers. But the truth might be more than she bargained for…

For the last five years, the Sandman has spent every night protecting Nora. When he hid the secret to the Nightmare Lord’s escape inside her dreams, he never expected to fall in love with her. Neither did he think his nemesis would find her so quickly, but there’s no mistaking his cruel handiwork. The Nightmare Lord is tired of playing by the rules and will do anything to release his deadly nightmares into the world, even if that means tormenting Nora until she breaks.

When the Nightmare Lord kidnaps Nora’s sister, Nora must enter enemy territory to save her. The Sandman is determined to help, but if Nora isn’t careful, she could lose even more than her family to the darkness.

About Amber:

AmberAmber R. Duell was born and raised in a small town in Central New York. While it will always be home, she’s constantly moving with her husband and two sons as a military wife. Before becoming published, she had a wide range of occupations including banking, bartending (though she’s never tried alcohol), and phlebotomy (though she faints with needles). She also volunteered as a re-enactor at the local Revolutionary War fort and worked near shelter cats which led to her previous crazy cat lady status.

She does her best writing in the middle of the night, surviving the daylight hours with massive amounts of caffeine. Her favorite stories are dark with a touch of romance and a villain you either love to hate or hate to love.

When not reading or writing, she enjoys snowboarding, embroidering, snuggling with her cat, and staying up way too late to research genealogy. She loves to travel and has visited more countries than states. Kissing the Blarney Stone and hand-feeding monkeys in the mountains of France will be hard to beat, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to find the next real-life adventure.

My Review

*Stunned silence* I…I loved this story! I have been a fan of Amber Duell’s since reading her Fragile Chaos back in January of this year, and more recently the prequel, Last Goodbye, which was about my favorite side character of Fragile Chaos. I love her way with mythology and making a world her own. Her characters are each original and have a life of their own, inviting the reader into their lives, their stories. It’s so magical, and leaves a lasting impression, long after the final page.

So I’ll admit, after loving her other work so much, I was eagerly awaiting her next books, and was so excited to hear it was going to be about The Sandman since I’ve always heard mentions of him in folklore, but haven’t heard of many retellings of his story (aside from Rise of the Guardians, and a few books here and there.)

So, my thoughts? Well first off I’ll point out that this is a dark fantasy, emphasis on dark. So I don’t recommend this for anyone who doesn’t like that sort of thing. Everyone else? Well, I can only speak for me, but I loved reading this! The monsters, the heroes, the action? Perfection! This is written in a duel POV so if that bothers you, here’s a heads-up, but I loved seeing the two sides. I also didn’t realize this was a trilogy until I started it, so I’m super excited to see the rest of this series in the future!

Thank you to the author for sending an advanced e-copy for me to read and write an honest review!

REVIEW: This one was an interesting read. I don’t often read Paranormal books, but this one managed to hold my attention. Though there are some elements common to this genre (maybe even cliche at times?) in this story, the fact-paced story and interesting characters make it a quick read.

My Monday

I’ve not been great at writing posts lately since things have been busy lately. There’s a lot going on, and my step-dad is on his week off so not a lot of computer time. I’ll work on scheduling some posts soon so hopefully I’ll have at least some new content. (I have been working on reviews though, and plan to have a Oct Wrap-up and some other things…*fingers-crossed*)

I have so many books (and series!) I hope to read before next year, yet I doubt I’ll get to most of them. That said, I’ve decided to work on reading some of the shorter books so I can at least get them out of that way.

The last week has been interesting, yet not as productive as I’d of liked. I went to the Psychiatrist and had my meds adjusted. My step-dad had an Dr. apt. Friday, then we went to visit his mom Saturday. Still, I had wished to clean more around the house, but with dreary weather, and cold temperatures, me and mom haven’t been feeling up to cleaning the house, so we’ve mostly been resting.

REVIEW: This series is so amazing! I was lucky enough to read an ARC of the fourth book, and just wow! Probably one of my favorite series since I started blogging! While this one is definitely made for Adults, it reminds me of all the YA/NA cross-overs happening lately in the writing style and characters.

There is a power brewing in Emporia, Cyrene. And I can’t shake the feeling, and I cannot pinpoint it. But it is there, and it is growing.”

Cyrene felt the same words that Serafina had echoed in one of her spirit dreams. A dark power had threatened to take Cyrene out of the dream. She had even succeeded in pulling Cyrene to her where she was cloaked in shadow. She’d told Cyrene to come to her and given her a portaling coin to do so. Cyrene still kept the coin with her at all times…even though she’d sworn to Vera and Matilde and Serafina that she would never use it.

“Like what Serafina said.”

“She was what made me test that energy. Her warning prompted me to check into the matter.”

“And?”

Vera shook her head. “It is worrisome, but it is not here. Not yet.” Her face was still pale though, and she looked nervous.

“What does it mean?”

“You know the story of the Creator, yes?”

“Of course,” Cyrene said. “She created all life and brought about the first people. She was the one who blessed the very first Doma with her powers.”

Vera nodded. “That is only half of the story.”

“As with all light, there is always darkness. A push and a pull. A yin and a yang,” Vera explained. She looked sideways, as if expecting Matilde to be there to finish her sentences. “As the story goes, the Creator had a sibling—the Destroyer. Two goddesses who brought life and death, good and evil, creation and destruction.”

“Okay. But it’s just a story.”

“Is it?” Vera whispered. “Aren’t all of your stories true? You believed them all to be myths. Dragons, Braj, Leifs. Just myths. How is this any different?”

“And you believe the energy you are feeling, that Serafina fears, and that found me in my dream was the goddess of destruction?” Cyrene’s eyes widened in abject horror. “Are you saying a god walked into my dream?”

Vera shook her head. “I don’t know. Yes. Maybe.”

“Well, that seems reasonable.”

Vera laughed unabashedly. “Oh, Cyrene, you always surprise me.”

“I mean, I tend to believe that the thing I least expect is probably most likely.”

“There’s no guarantee that this is the case,” Vera said. “I could be imagining it.”

“But you don’t think so.”

“No, I should have seen the signs long ago. Who else could be controlling the Braj, the Indres, and the Nokkin? They are her children after all. Created out of darkness and used as weapons. The Nokkin were the first descendants of the Doma. A family that magic corrupted and turned into horrible creatures that could suck the magic out of people, bent on destruction. There were signs. Just like there were signs the last time. And we did not see them.”

“The last time?” Cyrene asked. “Do you mean…these same things were happening during the War of the Light when Viktor killed Serafina?”

Vera nodded once.

“And did you see this goddess then?”

“No. Just her influence.”

“So, I might be about to fly into a panic for no reason.”

Vera smiled. “Perhaps. We have the gift of foresight, as we know both the prophecy and how this ended in the past. We can stop this, Cyrene. You can stop this. I believe in you. The past does not dictate the future, and you choose your destiny. Nothing is set in stone until it happens.”

“And here I thought, the worst part of my night was letting the man with the red feather slip through my fingers.”

“Let me worry for you. Creator knows I already do it enough,” Vera said. “Focus on the task at hand. We cannot fight an enemy we cannot see…and if we are unprepared, we will lose.”

Cyrene sighed heavily and flopped back on her bed. No pressure.

reincarnate. He has no way of knowing when or where she will return, or if she
will even look the same in her new life. He must rely on his ability to
recognize the actions of her fiery soul and her knack for attracting a killer

Norwegian harbor town, a surreal encounter with his own kind leads to devastating
consequences, causing Lucas to question his belief in himself and his quest.
With his will and options quickly fading, Lucas is offered help from an old

the assassination of the immortal king who took Spera’s life.

With an army raised and a strategy in
place, Lucas is ready to attack, until the sudden appearance of a ghost from
his past appears, forcing Lucas to take an even bigger risk than attempting to
kill a malicious king…letting him live.
WITHER – Prequel to the Hightower
Trilogy
Spera’s amber eyes appear first, burning
two holes in the dark of my sleeping mind. She’s inches from my face, but she
doesn’t see me. No matter how many times this happens, the utter lack of
recognition is a knife in my chest.

“Spera,” I hear my voice rasp, her name
echoing in my skull as she turns away, her black hair blending into the night
that surrounds her.

Another dream. Always the same. Chasing
this dead woman through the dark.

I know how it will end: I’ll wake up
calling for her, begging her to stop, to turn around, to give me any sign she
knows I’m there. She won’t. She never does. But I have to follow her. The ache
in my chest grows deeper the farther she goes from me. So, I follow after her,
Spera navigating shadows like a ship through still water. I follow in her wake,
always trailing, always two steps behind.
She startles me by breaking into a run.
She’s never run before. Her bare foot touches the ground, and the black surface
turns white. In an instant, snow is falling, blanketing the ground at an
incredible rate and speckling her hair with tiny white dots. Another step, and
the world around us pulses as the snow gives way to the greens and browns of a
forest, trees thick as houses. Another step and the shadows return. The side of
her face appears. Her lips part and air rushes out. Her elbows pump as she
strides faster, harder.

“Wait!” I bolt after her. My conscious
wrestles with the dream, threatening to roust me from this place. My focus
clings to the outline of her bare shoulders, to the glint of light from sources
unknown playing off her dancing hair. I want to stay where I can see her.

Before my eyes, the color of her hair
shifts from black to brown, and then to red. The length shortens, and then
spills long down her back again, now changing to blonde.

“Spera! It’s me! It’s Lucas! What’s
happening to you? What does this mean? Let me help you!” I cry out.

She veers hard to the left and a ray of
light pierces the dark, illuminating her side. She runs toward it. Her image is
reduced to an outline as she eclipses the glow. I scramble to keep up. We turn
again and the light fades, revealing an inky blue backdrop. The ground turns
cool and damp on my bare feet. A roar grows overhead. The scent of salt fills
my nose. The sensations are so vivid I have to remind myself I’m asleep.

I force my gaze away from her for a
moment and look up at the blue walls, which quiver with instability. Water.
We’re standing between two bodies of water that stretch so high I can’t discern
where the water ends and the sky begins. A single bead of ocean water trickles
down the left side to the black sand at my feet and my heart begins to pound.

WAYWARD – Book 3 in the Hightower

(Told from Tanzy’s point of view)
Asher’s realm stretches in front of me: a diamond tundra,
the air a series of rainbows as light is refracted from the prismatic ground
and reflected a million times over. The sight is impossible, glorious,
breathtaking…
But my mind, my focus, my every nerve ending is centered on
what—on who—is behind me; the king of this realm—Asher. His breath warms the
base of my neck, and the heat from his body is near enough to send shivers up
my spine. He baited me into a third kill by sending a phony candidate to attack
Jayce. Jayce—who fought for me, and fought like hell for the truth—always the truth. Jayce, who might be
dead, whose blood covered Reese’s shirt when she was forced through the veil
with me after I killed Genesis.
In this moment, I have two truths: One—I must kill Asher,
even though I have no idea how. Two—if I lose ground to Asher, I will not
regain it.
My body explodes into motion. My heel aims for the dip between
his thigh and his knee. Asher is faster, dropping his leg back. My momentum
carries me too far forward. I stumble sideways and brace for the blow I’ve left
myself open to receive.
It doesn’t come.
I fight the urge to back away. I can’t run from him—there’s
no point, and I swore I would never again back down in his presence. A stupid
oath, in hindsight, but it sounded good at the time, and I am roughly
ninety-five percent certain he won’t kill me here and now. I also vowed to live
long enough to seal the veil between our two worlds. In this moment, with that
five percent feeling bigger by the second, I’m not sure I can keep both
promises.
In white linen pants and a fitted t-shirt, Asher doesn’t
look dressed for a fight. He puts his hands in his pockets and saunters closer,
a smile on his white lips, sunlight gleaming in his black hair. “We both know
you can’t kill me on my side of the veil, Tanzy. And if I wanted you dead, I’d
simply leave you for the Taigo,” he says. “Any of them would be very eager to
collect the bounty their leader has placed on your head.”
“I’m an Unseen now. No one can kill me here but you,” I
retort, clenching my hands so he won’t see them tremble. I wonder if they’re
still stained with Genesis’s blood.
Asher’s brow lifts in amusement at my misinformation.
“You’re not Unseen. You are very capable of dying.”

fond of family, sunlight, and cookie dough.
I wrote my first book
in seventh grade, filling one hundred and four pages of a black and white Mead
notebook. Back then I lived for two things: horses and R.L. Stine books. Fast
forward nearly twenty years, and I still work with horses, and hoard books like
most women my age collect shoes. It’s amazing how much changes… and how much
stays the same.
The dream of
publishing a novel has hitch-hiked with me down every other path I’ve taken
(and there have been many.) Waitress, farm manager, road manager, bank teller,
speech writer, retail, and more. But that need to bring pen to paper refused to
quiet. Finally, in 2009, I sat down, pulled out a brand new notebook, and once
again let the pictures in my head become words on paper.
As a child, my grandfather
would sit me in his lap and weave tales about the Cherokee nation, and a girl
who belonged with horses. His words painted a whole new world, and my mind
would take flight. My hope – my dream – is that Tanzy’s journey does the same
for you.

Salt for Air

By M.C. Frank

Greek mythology meets The Little Mermaid in this delicious fantasy novel about a quiet, nerdy girl who meets a mer prince in her bathroom. Perfect for fans of The Heroes of Olympus and the Lux series.

Seventeen-year-old Ellie dreams of mermen. She writes fanfiction about them and spends time in underwater kingdoms in her imagination, trying to escape the sad reality: she is an orphan. And not only that, but she’s bullied every day at school -she’s a nerd, she hates sports, she loves books and she used to be overweight. What’s not to bully?

One day, the bullies go too far. They try to drown her, but at the last minute an otherworldly creature shows up in the water. He keeps her breathing and tells her to live: “How will you be able to save anyone if you can’t even save yourself?”

She thinks it was a dream, but the emerald-eyed merman boy who rescued her appears in her school the next day. Is he really the exiled prince of an ancient kingdom that’s on the brink of utter destruction? And is he asking her to save him? Or is something far more sinister and deadly lurking in the water that surrounds her little Greek town?

When myth and reality collide, can love save their lives?

Salt for Air is already available for purchase in paperback, and the ebook will be released on October 23rd. Do you like books with nerdy heroines, mermaids, Greek mythology retellings and swoon worthy heroes? If so, then Salt for Air is the book for you!

REVIEW: *I received an ARC from the author for review. This does not affect my review.*

I always get excited when M. C. Frank has a new book! She has a unique writing style and always writes about interesting characters in beautifully detailed settings, involving exciting events and often danger! This one is no exception. I enjoyed reading about Ellie and Ky, and the side characters also added to the story.

But, I hate adding a but, though in this one it’s needed. So what is it? While I enjoyed the story overall, and can easily give it a solid 4-star rating, there were a few things that I struggled with.

First was Ellie and Ky’s relationship. We start with Ellie in dire need, and Ky encouraging her to fight…only he insults her, possible to make her mad and want to fight?, not sure but I don’t like ‘relationship goals’ being based on insults or other negative interactions. Although this relationship gets better over time, it still annoyed me.

Also Ellie…I get it, she’s been bullied and has suffered great loss, but again their’s a point later in the story where her decision making skills came into questions…I felt there should have been more…I don’t know, but it seemed like she should have felt something, and yet it came off as indifferent or even bored.

Still, as mentioned the more I read the more I enjoyed about this story. At first I wasn’t sure what would happen, which is the plan I think?, I do know that it’s better to read it yourself before trying to learn more about it, since everything you will need is always explained in the story. It’s one of those that it’s best going in blind, just know that it’s a mermaid story and enjoy the ride. 🙂

About the Author:

Welcome to the engrossing world of M.C. FRANK’s books, where characters aren’t going to have an easy time of it: They will find themselves in icy-cold dystopian worlds where kissing is forbidden (among other things), or in green forests ruled by evil Sheriffs. If they’re in Jane Austen’s England, they have to be running away from a traumatic childhood, or if they are in our contemporary world, they’re scared they’ll die before they have finished high school. That sort of thing.
Don’t worry, though, she knows we all need a little hope and joy in our lives, so there’s a good dose of those as well in everything she writes.
M.C. Frank (writer, reader, designer, physicist and teacher, to name a few) has been living in a world of stories ever since she can remember (that’s before she knew how to write). She started writing them down when she could no longer stand the characters in her head screaming at her to give them life, and while those first scribblings weren’t exactly good (nor were they books, although she insisted on calling them that), they were enough for her to discover her passion in life.
She got her university degree in physics a few years ago (yes, she’s like Sheldon, only a bit crazier!) and is now free to pursue her love of reading and writing, as well her free-lance job as editor-in-chief. She lives with her ‘dude’ in a home filled with candles, laptops and notebooks, where she rearranges her overflowing bookshelves every time she feels stressed.
Which is often, since (as you might have noticed) she doesn’t pick the easiest subjects for her novels.
