Three trials stand between Lera and exile. Unless the training kills her first.

Quint magic has never chosen a human before, and the Elders Council is convinced Lera is a mistake.

When the quint refuses to be cleaved apart, the enraged elders give them a choice: exile from Lunos or demotion to the lowest of trainees. Subject again to the humiliations and deadly trials they endured centuries ago, the males now face a new challenge—training Lera to survive.

River, Shade, Coal, and Tye will do whatever it takes to keep Lera safe. But Lera will do whatever she must to keep them together—even if it means putting herself in mortal danger.

My Review:

I was excited to start this series last month, and it turned out to be one of my favorite reads of 2018 so far! So when I got the email saying the second book, Mistake of Magic, was on tour, I may have done a happy dance!

Oh! I love the story Alex Lidell tells in this series, and the characters are all interesting and complex. Often, in romance stories, especially reverse harems, the characters can come off as boring, or slightly different versions of the same thing, or worst of all, copy-paste characters that are so similar to loads of other in the genre (I’m looking at you paranormal and contemporary.)

That said, I was so excited to find each of the characters, Lara and the four males, are their own, and they all have strengths and weaknesses, which we get to see as they try to adjust to being bound to Lara, a female human, the one thing none of the males ever expected to join their quint.

Mistake of Magic shows the quint as they compete and train to pass the trials laid before them by the Council in order to be accepted as a complete quint. While Lara isn’t strong, or immortal, she brings the males together in a way none of them could have ever imagined, making them even stronger. Yet, being a human female, she also poses a great risk, and the males must learn to protect her without becoming vulnerable themselves.

I loved seeing the trials, and the quint, in this second installment of the Power of Five series. As with the first, I wish it was longer, but I loved reading it, and the pacing and characters were well done.
