Nine30

They say home is where the heart is, but if that’s true, then I’m lost because I have no clue where my heart is, anymore. I thought I knew—until I met Maximillian.

I was on my way out of the Capital City before the local vampires could catch on to me and let’s just say if that happened then this club dancer would be facing her expiration date. And that’s when the famous DJ blew into town—and into my head and heart. He turned all my plans upside down with his sick friend and his electric blue eyes, damn it.

I should have cut bait and run for my life, but I couldn’t abandon someone I could heal—even if it meant the vampires might catch up with me. Besides, Maximillian smelled familiar, like deep forest and pine needles baked in the sun mixed with that chilly snap of running water and the coolness of twilight. Those things have a smell that adds up to a dream.

You can get lost in that kind of dream. It can fill your mind with ideas and notions you have no business thinking or feeling. Dreams like that make it easy to forget the danger you’re in.

Blood Moon Magick (Excerpt)

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Blood Moon Magick by S.M. Blooding!

2.3h Blood Moon Magick Detective Paige Whiskey has a lot on her plate. A gate to Hell is permanently seared into her soul and she has no way of controlling it. She let a psychotic serial killing demon free in exchange for Dexx’s life. Her sister is about to have a baby and a whole world of crazy has opened in the Whiskey household. And, if that wasn’t enough, she and Dexx are trying to figure out their relationship.

They’re about to discover a world that has been hidden from the Whiskeys. A world of shapeshifters, werewolves, and vampires. A world that was hidden to end a bloody war. A war between shifters and witches.

Paige has to make a decision. Solve this murder and start a war? Or ignore it and keep her family safe?

But when Dexx is bitten, all everything changes. War? Or love?

Why is nothing ever simple?

Excerpt
“Who has the coolest super power?” Dexx asked, propping his wine glass with a finger of scotch on his knee.
At least they weren’t in Dixie cups. “I do, without a doubt.” Though, her ability to control her incredibly cool gift? That was in question. The pull of the growing moon rode her hard. Made her feel over-sexed, over-driven.
No. More like an over-charged battery.
Jack frowned at her. “What can you do?”
Paige smirked. “What can’t I do? I’m a freakin’ witch.”
“Whatever that means.” Tony turned in his chair to see her better. “Show us.”
Raising her eyebrows, she scooted up, propping herself on the edge of the loveseat. Blessed Mother. Booze? Plus a stronger gift? She could blow this place up.
Stop it. Her wards would protect her. Anything that became too much would be sloughed off into the protections she’d set up around her apartment. Her broom would help, too.
Famous last words.
She’d never felt the pull of the moon this hard. Maybe it was because she’d been cut off from it for five years while her gift had been growing. Maybe.
Okay. Something simple. Something easy.
A slow smile slipped over her lips as she sank into herself and reached for the elements around her. Being a witch was awesome. Feeling the connection to the All Mother, to the world around her? Feeling the life energy of everyone and everything.
Dear Goddess. She’d missed this.
The one large window was filled with big pots of half-dead plants. She listened, waiting until she could hear their soft speech. They spoke through sound and something else she couldn’t quite put her finger on. It wasn’t emotion or visions. It was almost…Life. They spoke through life.
She touched them with a soul finger. They turned toward her, their essence moving like a shadow of glittering light, leaving the husk of their green leaves behind. The air filled with whispers as they barraged her with questions. The smell of soil met her nose. What little water resided in the air touched the dirt, and the smell changed, became less harsh, more homey.
The plant closest to the TV was a common vine. A weed. Small green leaves, small purple leaves, small purple and silver striped leaves. Three plants. One pot. The vines reached toward her, the husks of the actual plant rising to meet the glowing life essence, touching her heart chakra. Gold light mixed with green.
And exploded.
When she opened her eyes, that plant had overtaken the window. Vines swept up the blinds, up the wall, finding the string of a tissue paper flower hanging from the ceiling.

She swallowed. She’d only intended for it to grow a little. Not overtake everything. Bloody hell.
Jack stood by the dining room as he stared in horror at the plant. He brought his beer mug to his lips and chugged his margarita.
“Feed me, Seymour,” Dexx said in his best Little Shop of Horrors voice.
Tony’s eyes widened, his mouth rounded. He blinked his gaze back toward Paige. “I thought you were a demon summoner.”
She shrugged. “I’m a witch first, and that’s just my favorite party trick.” Liar. “What about you? Vampire. What can you do?”
He shook out his fingers and released a breath. He resituated in his chair, then chuckled. “This is a little weird, isn’t it?”
Paige shrugged. “Not really. Guys, this is the world we’re making.”
“What happens if we don’t?”
“If we don’t what?” Paige asked. “Accept each for who and what we are? Don’t break down hundreds of years of distrust and mystery?”
Tony stared painfully up at the ceiling. “Yeah?”
Reality was a bitch. “We have one dead shifter already. What happens when there are two? Or three? Or four? Or more? And what happens when we realize we could have done more? We could have worked together? We could have used our powers as a team?”
Dexx scratched his head.
Tony rubbed his face.
Jack nodded his way back to the papasan chair.
“The time for secrets is at an end, guys. It has to be. If we can’t get past this?” Paige leaned back, the hand not holding her wine on her head. “We might as well just give up now.”

Self-Published Saturday: Author Interview - Segilola Salami

I invited some authors for interviews, and Ms. Salami is the first! I'll tell you a little about one of her books, and the interview is listed below. I have others I am talking to, and hope to make this a weekly event! Hope you enjoy, and feel free to contact, follow, or buy books for any of the authors listed, their links will be listed below.

27864285

OK here goes:
Segilola Salami:
I am mom to the most beautiful little girl. I write bilingual Yoruba English children's books. My latest book is called Yetunde: An Ode to My Mother. I host a podcast show called The Segilola Salami Show, it is set in a virtual cafe and is very light hearted. I have guest authors come on the show where we talk about publishing in general then review an indie book (almost like a book club). I am also a Self Publishing strategist. I help aspiring authors navigate the minefield that is self publishing.

My book (I have three):
Yetunde: The Life and Times of a Yoruba Girl in London
Blurb:
Yetunde is a series of stories that follows the every day life of 6 month old Yetunde as she's narrated African folktales by her mom Iya Yetunde whilst growing up in London. Iya Yetunde also tries to improve her Yoruba speaking ability, so we see a nice mish mash of Yoruba and English. The folktales are of West African origin.
The other two are also educational about
Yoruba, one teaches numbers in English and Yoruba. The other Yetunde: An Ode to My Mother features
Yetunde's ode to her grandmother, and is a story to celebrate mothers.
 Interview:
1. What made you decide to write children's books?
I didn’t plan to become an author, it sort of just fell into my laps

2. Where do you get the inspiration for your stories from?
My lil girl and my mom. I write what I would like to read to my daughter and what I imagine I would say to her when she is older. I also write to reflect what I think I would say to my mom if I could get one more minute to spend with her. She's late now :(

3. What do you hope to teach people with your stories?
With the two Yetunde books in general, I want readers to learn a little about the Yoruba culture. I want readers from other cultures to see how to balance belonging to two different cultures, especially if they don't live in their country of origin. With my latest book, I want the adults readers to remember the power of a mother's love and for younger readers to know that irrespective of how many times their mommies (and mommy figures) tell them off for being naughty, she absolutely loves them

4. What made you decide to self publish your books?
To be honest, I didn't even think of traditional publishing, I had a finished book manuscript and the next logical thing to do seeing as i had recently found out about publishing directly to Amazon, was to upload my manuscript to Amazon

5. Who or what influence the books you write?
No one, not really . . . Actually, saying that, I read a book in my early teens called The Gods Are Not To Blame by Ola Rotimi. Till today, I find the story so profound that I hold on to the moral in the story. My interpretation of the story is that we should not run away from our problems no matter how bad they seem. So whilst I don't intentionally set out to write like Ola Rotimi, I think my job as an author is achieved if 20 years from now, someone can hold onto the moral of one of my stories and use it to shape one aspect of their lives positively.

Title:  Resolution: Huck Finn’s Greatest Adventure
Author:  Andrew Joyce
Published:  April 13th, 2016
Publisher:   William Birch & Assoc.
Genre:  Historical Fiction/Adventure
Synopsis:
It is 1896 in the Yukon Territory, Canada. The largest gold strike in the annals of human history has just been made; however, word of the discovery will not reach the outside world for another year.
By happenstance, a fifty-nine-year-old Huck Finn and his lady friend, Molly Lee, are on hand, but they are not interested in gold. They have come to that neck of the woods seeking adventure.
When disaster strikes, they volunteer to save the day by making an arduous six-hundred-mile journey by dog sled in the depths of a Yukon winter. They race against time, nature, and man. With the temperature hovering around seventy degrees below zero, they must fight every day if they are to live to see the next.
On the frozen trail, they are put upon by murderers, hungry wolves, and hostile Indians, but those adversaries have nothing over the weather. At seventy below, your spit freezes a foot from your face. Your cheeks burn—your skin turns purple and black as it dies from the cold. You are in constant danger of losing fingers and toes to frostbite.
They cannot stop or turn back. They can only go on. Lives hang in the balance—including theirs.

Review:
I'm so excited I got to take part in this blog tour! I was given a complementary copy in exchange for an honest review. I choose to take part in this blog tour, because I have always loved Huck Finn and stories about Alaska and sled dogs. Put them together, and I couldn't pass it up! I love how it's written, reminding me of classics, namely those by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens). It just felt right, and was also detailed, flavored with experience and passion. While not overly detailed, Mr. Joyce threw in fun facts along the way, such as the different words used to guide a sled-team, mush is common, but do you know what words are use for turning left, or right? Do you know what pedaling is? (It's where you run along side, or behind the sled to make it easier on the dogs!) Although they might seem random, they add just a little more flavor to the writing. He also uses words like 'mite' and 'reckon' which I can remember the last time I read in a book, but they add all the more to the feel and setting!

I really enjoyed reading the book, and highly recommend it to any historical fiction, or Huck Finn fans, along with anyone who enjoys a good adventure/survival story! It's well written and sure to please.

Excerpt:

Huck, tiring of the conversation, picked up the bottle and filled his and Molly’s glasses. Jass’ was still full. “Alright, Mister Knight, how do you plan on doing it? Take us out back and shoot us?"
“I must say you are taking this like a gentleman. No crying or begging for mercy?”
“Would I get any?”
“Any what?”
“Mercy.”
“Most likely not.”
Huck looked at Molly and nodded.
She stood with such force that she knocked her chair backwards and it started to fall. She had her gun out and in her hand before the chair hit the floor. The scraping noise of the chair as Molly stood turned the men’s attention from the gold to the table. It was the last act of their lives. Molly had a bullet into each one of them before they knew they were dead.

Author Bio:
J. Kowallis, the only girl of four children, grew up in northern Utah with a head full of wild stories (most often unreal). At the age of 9, she wrote her first poem, a dedication to E.B. Between living in various fictional worlds, and spending time on her studies, she managed to graduate from Weber State University’s creative writing program. She now lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta, and spends most of her time still bouncing between this world and the fantastical while enjoying delectable über-dark chocolate and lavender baths. Review: The Quest for Hope

The Quest for Hope The Quest for Hope by A.S. King
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

**I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review**

Cover: Beautiful
Rating 4 Stars
Overall: Exciting
Characters: Interesting and believable
Plot: A great start to the series
Page Turner: Yes
Series Cont.? Yes

Ok, ok so I should have written this ....a week ago :P I've read two amazing books since then, and well feel kind of bad, since this one's already a little fuzzy, not in a bad way, it's just...I traveled 500 miles through Alaska in the 1800s on a dog-sled, and fought to save the world from the Queen of the Underworld since this...More on those later XD

Blurb:
In the dark land of Novus, a Light is beginning to move. As the true High King attempts to rally his forces, crystalline beings move among mortals, seen and heard only by those specially attuned to their existence. One of the Erela stands supreme above all the rest. Known as the Dark One, Zohar has all but succeeded in erasing the name of the High King from the hearts and minds of everyone in Novus. It is now up to the rest of the Erela to stop his wrath.

In an unknown community tucked away in a hidden valley, an Erela recruits a young apprentice to help carry out their important mission. As Levi embarks on a dangerous quest to fetch a princess and bring her to Zion to fulfill her destiny, she is struggling to understand why she has been chosen to be the new Queen of Novus. After twelve-year-old Aliatta learns the truth about her identity, her life intertwines with Levi's. As the pair begins the long trek to Zion, they have no idea that the Dark One's fury has just begun.

The Quest for Hope begins an exciting saga of good versus evil as a young apprentice and a princess journey through a perilous land so she can fulfill her purpose to become their new queen.

Pros:
I really enjoyed this book! I'm Christian but I have always had... struggles with Christianity. Especially their fiction works. Often they focus on romance, or just fall...flat. Being a fantasy lover, I am always suspicious of Christian fantasy, as they are often average at best. This one pleasantly surprised me! Though it isn't my favorite, even among Christian fantasy, I highly recommend it to others who enjoy Christian fantasy. It takes a refreshingly new look at the main characters, and although I feared they would push romance, they again took another turn! The plot, history and setting, and even the characters and races were all interesting, and I enjoyed taking part in their journey.

Cons:
The writing, although beautiful, seemed dull and drawn out in spots. Some of the characters also seemed to lack emotion at time. It wasn't throughout the whole story, and didn't bother me enough to change my opinion of the story, but I do admit they do exist in spots. This is a common theme in Christian fantasy, and I imaging it's hard enough to write fantasy, add religion without getting preachy? You are asking for trouble, but it was handled well, and as a first book, hold a lot of potential!

Over all:
I've seen this book around, and thought I would check it out. It was a little difficult to figure out who was who in the first chapter or so, but once you got past the introductions it was an exciting read, and the world and characters are beautifully described as the story unfolds. I loved the way the history was told, and how the story of Creation was presented. It was refreshing to see they didn't follow many of the clique plots in Christian fantasy, and tried to make something new and refreshing. I look forward to read the second book, and would gladly read anything else the authors offer.

Welcome to by stop on the cover reveal tour for Fall of Thrones and Thorns by Jennifer Ellision! It's beautifully done, and I'm excited to share it with you!

Fall of Thrones and Thorns
Jennifer Ellision
(Threats of Sky and Sea #3)
Publication date: September 27th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
War hurtles in, a typhoon over the sea.
After Bree’s life was torn apart, Nereidium had represented a haven to her. A place that—if she could save it—was beyond the King’s reach.
And, at last, she’s arrived upon its shores. But things in Nereidium are not what they should be.
The land is plagued by a rash of mysterious earthquakes, the likes of which it’s never known. The governors are distracted by old traditions, while Bree and her friends grapple with changing identities and the sense that the longer they wait to take action… the greater the danger from Egria grows.
Bree is tired of living under the shadow of King Langdon’s power. And she’s tired of waiting for him to be the first to act.
In this final chapter of the Threats of Sky and Sea series, it all comes down to Nereidium or Egria. To Bree or the King. It’s kill… or be killed.
And not everyone will escape the battle unscathed.
